People were not converted by Gayetty’s aloe vera infused sheets in their fancy box. However, people DID become a bit enamored of the Scott brothers’ rolls of toilet tissue.

Clarence and Irvin Scott began hawking rolls of TP to hotels and drugstores. They were rather successful in this business to business endeavor. Selling direct to people was a different matter. People were so ashamed to talk about bodily functions that they wouldn’t ask for toilet paper. This went for the Scott brothers too! They did not claim their own invention for years. They began selling toilet paper rolls in 1890 but didn’t admit to it until 1902.
Thanks to MentalFloss for much of my information.
