In addition to drought, Considerant didn’t quite plan for living off the land in Texas. He underestimated the number of snakes and scorching hot days while overvaluing the land quality and farming talents of his followers. The vast majority of people who arrived in La Reunion were quite smart and talented, but their skill sets did not match the task at hand. Among the people who arrived were several shoemakers, philosophers, writers, bankers, bookkeepers, architects and brewers/distillers. There were only two people who identified as farmers plus a lone botanist along with a single blacksmith and two carpenters. This meant that people with virtually no survival skills were tasked with setting up farmable land from scratch and building livable homes from the materials at hand. And this had to be organized to feed and shelter no less than 200 people.
Keep an eye out for the conclusion of the La Reunion story!
