The beginnings of Neiman-Marcus, Part II
Going a bit backwards to explain how Herbert and Carrie Marcus came to be in Dallas, this post will cover their early years (briefly) before the opening of the Neiman-Marcus department store.
Herbert (1878) and Carrie (1883) were born in Louisville, Kentucky. Herbert quickly dropped out of formal education at the local public school while Carrie was never formally educated. She was very worldly, though, ordering fashion magazines from around the world and studying them intently. Their parents were German Jewish immigrants and as Carrie primarily studied German fashion magazines, I assume the children were bilingual. Herbert would shortly be headed for Hillsboro, TX….check in tomorrow.
