Adding to our pile of nevermore buildings, here is a beauty! This is St. Paul’s Sanitarium – this building is so delightful it makes me want to feign consumption just to get inside those walls. Having consumption would dang near be worth it as this building was the first in Dallas to have hot and cold running water PLUS electricity when it was built in 1898. It was located at 3121 Bryan Street. Being that this is the ‘nevermore’ series, though, this building no longer exists. It was pulled down in 1968 and strangely enough, we have photos of that.
The architect of the sanitarium was H.A. Overbeck who also created the “Katy” Building. The Katy Building is formally known as the MKT train line headquarters in the West End of Dallas. On our tours, it is the building that goes along with the Crash at Crush story.
Here is a fantastic article about the sanitarium on Flashback Dallas.
