Next up in our nevermore series:  automobile destination clubs.
During the 19teens and 1920s, automobiles were becoming all the rage. Entire industries sprung up to support this new mode of transportation. However, in addition to needing mechanics, garages and highways, moneyed folks needed a place to drive to – enter, the automobile country club.

In 1914, the Dallas Automobile Country Club was completed near what is now 75 and Walnut Hill Lane – the absolute boonies in 1914. It offered not only a destination, but some impressive activities: an *indoor* golf course, bowling alleys, locker rooms to freshen up, dining rooms and smoking rooms (but isn’t that EVERY room at the time?). It also had a lovely wrap around porch – take your goggles, driving gloves and cigarettes out there, fancy pants.

After several name changes, the Dallas Automobile Country Club was consigned to the nevermore pile in 1978 when it was torn down to make way for residential and commercial development.
You don’t have to drive to one of our tours – there are DART rail stations right next to our Dallas AND Garland Square start points!
