I have written about Alex Cockrell before in that he was one of the first non-Native settlers on the Trinity River in Dallas. But I admire him because he married the ruling bad ass of early Dallas, Sarah Horton Cockrell.
Alex was a bit of a wild child, living with Native Americans to avoid local laws/rules, running stagecoaches back and forth to Louisiana, racking up lots of hard feelings in Dallas, etc. He was named in at least 40+ court cases for either owing people money or claiming they owed him. Sarah’s family was horrified when they learned she was going to marry him. The Cockrells had 6 kids together before Alex was shot in the street after throwing a punch at local law enforcement; a law enforcement officer he happened to be in a court case against. That officer was found not guilty in a hotly anticipated trial.
Alex Cockrell was buried in Greenwood Cemetery. He is surrounded by family. I will discuss a few of his relatives, including Sarah, in coming posts.
