Ringing in her 199th birthday this month, chief female badass of Dallasites: Sarah Horton Cockrell. In a time of rampant diseases without cure, scant sanitation and even less modern medical treatment, Sarah Cockrell buried her parents, her husband, all of her brothers and sisters (6) and two of her own four children. She lived to be in her 70’s, cutting a swath through the city and garnering respect along the way as an astute capitalist.
While her husband, Alex, was alive, she kept the books, paperwork and correspondence for their many investments and businesses. Upon his death (being shot by a deputy he owed money to; the courtroom burst in to cheers when the deputy was acquitted as Alex had many enemies), she took over the business and expanded it vastly. By the time of her death (1892), she would own a full quarter of downtown Dallas. And that was only part of her holdings.
Cheers to Sarah Horton Cockrell, who started kicking ass way back when Dallas had a population in the double digits.
