Getting out of the St. Louis city jail in 1894, H.H. Holmes ultimately screwed his cellmate out of his cut of their planned life insurance scam money. The former cellmate then started singing like a canary to the local authorities. Opening a new investigation in to life insurance scams of Holmes, it was quickly discovered that several people in his life appeared to be missing, all having previously, and conveniently, named Holmes the beneficiary of their life insurance policy. The vast majority of these people were adult women who believed themselves engaged or married to Holmes.
