This is now an empty, glass-fronted furniture (?) store on the north side of Garland’s square. However, it used to be one of the fanciest buildings on the entire square. This photo, however, crops out the lovely corbelling and parapets that were on the top of the building. There were three bays to the building, holding, respectively – a hardware store, a furniture and funeral store*, and an electric theater. That theater was one of the first in Garland. It was called the Lyric Electric Theatre.
The corbelling and parapets were revealed with a renovation in 2010 and promptly dismantled. It was the last remaining bit of this type of architecture on the square.
Want to hear more about architecture on the square? Join us on Saturday, November 3rd (this Saturday!) at 5:30 or 7:00 pm. We start from the Millhouse Pizzeria and Stage, 532 Main Street, Garland 75040. $10 cash/1 hour tour.
*Furniture stores also made coffins. Marrying a furniture store, coffin making, funeral parlor and sometimes even an embalmer in to a single store was just streamlined business. #themoreyouknow
