The Neiman-Marcus crew has a building on Elm Street and stock to sell thanks to Carrie!
Minnie (Lichtenstein, Herbert Marcus’ wife and Carrie’s sister-in-law) did not play a large role in the Neiman-Marcus business. The other three roughly divided the duties as such: Carrie was the buyer and a salesperson; Herbert was bookkeeping and a salesperson; Al was in charge of marketing and personnel. Opening day was a coup for Carrie as the building of the store and its luxurious fittings took nearly all of their capital. Carrie traveled to New York City by train to buy stock and successfully sweet-talked several merchants in to loaning her stock on credit. She returned with nearly an entire train full of goods with a promise to pay.
