The beginnings of Neiman-Marcus

Herbert Marcus arrived in Dallas in 1899 and his sister Carrie arrived a short time later. They became some of the highest paid salespeople in Dallas due to their very personal attention to their clients. (Carrie was *the* highest paid saleswoman in Dallas at $100 a month while Herbert was pulling in $140.) Carrie worked at A. Harris (specializing in shirtwaists, originally) while Herbert worked at Sanger Brothers (starting out in the women’s shoe department).

Fun trivia for you: Also employed at Sanger Brothers? Frank James, brother of Jesse James.

The full story of Neiman-Marcus will follow in ‘chapters’! Stay tuned – fires, affairs, Coca-Cola, typhus, and high fashion to follow.
