Alrighty, kids, sit back because have I got a doozy of a story for you.
Once upon a time, four days ago, when I was socially distancing-ly riding my bike with a friend, we stopped by the Pecan Grove Cemetery in McKinney. Cemeteries are a perfect place to escape the living right now.
Our story starts with the funkiness of the cemetery itself – it has the graves of over TWO HUNDRED Civil War Veterans. 200! We were stumbling on them, literally and figuratively, they are so numerous. The Pecan Grove dates back to 1870, when it was incorporated, but it actually has a handful of graves that pre-date the 1870 incorporation.
Fun fact #1: The cemetery is private and does not belong to the city of McKinney.
Fun fact #2: Five gentlemen are responsible for organizing the cemetery in 1870. One of those men is named E.R. Stiff. That is a damn fine pun, Mr. Stiff.
But, our actual story centers on a lone burial with a magnificent, very recently installed, Irish headstone actually carved in Ireland. It belongs to the McKillop family.
