Patrolman Shelton H Norman was given his job back after being fired for opening fire at a VFW Post in Mesquite.
Norman was involved in a ‘saloon brawl’ while at the VFW on December 19th, 1971. He was off duty at the time, but carrying a gun, which he fired in self-defense. No one was injured, but Norman was immediately fired by the police chief.
Norman appealed the firing and was reinstated on this date by City Manager Scott McDonald. Why was his dismissal overturned so quickly? Norman was a 16-year veteran of the force, but what people really admired about him was his ability to train the department’s German Shepard to sniff out bombs. It pays to be good with dogs.
